Vehicle Pre-Crash Detection Project

Using remote sensors such as lasers, radar and ultrasonic, real-time signal processing and artificial intelligence, an onboard computer can predict a collision before contact is made.   This early warning system will enable new and more effective safety technologies or even allow vehicles to avoid collisions automatically. This ongoing research effort has been supported by the Office of Naval Research through the California Central Coast Research Partnership and also by funding from Lockheed Martin and Delphi Automotive. All the work has been performed by mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering students. The project has generated numerous senior projects and summer internships.
